I found a hotel in NYC! The Milford Plaza on 45th Street at 8th Avenue (right in the theatre district). This one comes with Bud's mom's seal of approval, and if she says it's OK, odds are overwhelmingly in its favor. Should be pretty easy to get to — Jamaica Station to Penn Station, then the M10 bus up 8th Ave. I'll probably take a taxi from Penn Station the first day when I've got all my bags with me. So, the room has been booked for my next trip to NYC (for only $99! I was paying $149 to stay out in Rockville Centre!) and I'll let you know how it goes afterward.
