Got a DVD player? (2002-11-14)

Check out NetFlix. It's an interesting twist on renting movies; you sign up for $19.95/mo, and create a “queue” of movies you want to see. They ship you three of them, and you can keep them as long as you wish. When you return one, they pull the next movie from your list and send [...]

Man, this is cool! (2002-11-14)

I've been using Blogger for my main blog tool, but since I finally got around to putting MT on my own server, I figured I ought to try exporting my Blogger stuff and moving it into MT. Geez, it was simple! The documentation for Movable Type is so well done, that it was no big [...]

Welcome (2002-11-14)

As always, I'm experimenting. This time, not so much with new software (I'm moving this site into Movable Type, something I'm already familiar with), but with style sheets and getting things to work as expected. Bear with me as the site migrates. Fortunately, there's very little real content to move.

What's a self-signed certificate? (2002-11-12)

Well, first things first: This is information that is probably only of interest to a true unadulterated propellerhead. You're probably familiar with the little lock icon that your browser displays when you're on a “secure” connection, right? That little icon is an indication that the information sent between your browser and the remote server is [...]

After pounding my head against the wall… (2002-11-12)

After pounding my head against the wall, it miraculously broke through! I've been trying to figure out how to create self-signed SSL certificates that I can use for my websites hosted on Microsoft's IIS. I can find all kinds of information about creating certificates for Apache, and I've even got a Linux box with OpenSSL [...]

Whew! (2002-11-8)

I received OpenBSD 3.2 by mail yesterday and installed it on my trusty cast-off Pentium that'll ultimately become my firewall. Here are some observations: The installer expects that you know your stuff. Period. There's no flashy graphics, not even text-based windows. The furthest it goes toward fancy is to display some of the startup information [...]

Kudos for MT (2002-11-7)

If you take a look at http://atlas.atlcon.net, you'll see the new site. Very little of the site is maintained outside of Movable Type; the vast majority of the pages are generated automatically as I add new content in Movable Type. For example, the most recent news items automatically populate the main page. Category Indexes (accessible [...]

MailWasher (2002-11-7)

Another interesting tool: MailWasher is an email “scanner” that will detect SPAM and allow you to delete it before you download from your mailbox. Essentially, it's a customized email client that knows a bit about what SPAM looks like. Seems to work pretty well, and you can't beat the price (FREE). Download it from http://www.mailwasher.net/download/.

w.bloggar (2002-11-7)

I'm playing with w.bloggar today. It's a “Blog Client” that runs on your PC and allows you to create and post blog entries without having to fire up your browser. Seems counterintuitive, I know, but it's a pretty nice little program. Keep it minimized and pop it up when you want to add something, and [...]

<grin> This is funny (2002-11-1)

<grin> This is funny. I am 40% Internet AddictI could go either way. Deep into the madness of nights filled with coding CGI-Scriptsand online role playing games, or I could become a normal user. Good luck! Take the Internet Addict Test at fuali.com
