I'm not pleased to learn that DirecTV DSL is going out of business (more info on their website). I've been using DTV broadband for a couple of years at the office, and for about 3 months at home (since BellSlouch finally installed a remote DSLAM in my little corner of metro Atlanta). They had a great deal: $50/month and a fixed IP, along with no particular problems with running a server on your DSL line.
Now it looks like the next best bet is going to be EarthLink at about $65/mo. BellSouth won't even consider offering fixed IP unless you've got a business line (one of the lines in the house is a business account), but it's upwards of $120/mo. Now, I use my Internet connection for business, but I would hardly consider my sometimes use and my kids Disney-surfing as sufficiently heavy to justify paying business rates.
Perhaps DTV will come up with a good transition plan for me (it's still up in the air for BellSouth as of this writing). Cross your fingers and say a little prayer, K?
