Bob Schieffer was a guest on Morning Edition today, touting his new book This Just In: What I couldn't tell you on TV. The conversation (with Bob Edwards) turned to Face The Nation, and Mr. Schieffer told a wonderful story.
On Face The Nation they try very hard not to cancel their guests, because you don't want to get a reputation for that when you're booking the kinds of guests they do. But on one occasion, the guest canceled them.
Apparently they had booked a "Professional Ethicist" as a guest, and he called on Friday afternoon to say that he would be unable to appear on the show. The flustered Executive Producer said “What?! You can't cancel. You promised you'd do the show. You're a professional ethicist!”
To which he replied “Yes, I know. I'm terribly sorry, but I got a better offer on another show.”
Perhaps the amateur ethicists understand the field better than the pros…
