Unmirroring TUCOWS :(
I had to take down the TUCOWS mirror that we host late last week, and it just killed me to do it.
For the last four years or so, my ISP has been (I'm told) one of the top 100 mirrors of the TUCOWS download site. Of late, I think we were probably in the top 20, as the traffic on the server has shot through the roof. More than likely, it's because we became the only mirror in Georgia, and continued to update on a regular basis (more than six times a day) so the content was fresh.
Unfortunately, the amount of bandwidth being consumed by the mirror site had grown to the point that it is costing me serious money…on the order of $1,000/mo, since it's enough to push us into the next category for bandwidth from our provider. So, although it killed me to do it, I had to pull the plug for the financial wellbeing of my company!
Hopefully someday when we grow more we'll have sufficient bandwidth to spare again, and I'll turn the mirror back on. It's nice to give back to a company that's done good things for me (of course, I'm guessing that TUCOWS makes in a day what my company pulls down in a couple of years, but that's a separate point).
UPDATE: OK, I checked the numbers. TUCOWS makes in a day what my company makes in about 287 days, but the point is still valid. 😉
