Can't find SKU111.CAB

I ran into an odd problem today that I'm sure affects other
people.  Just in case you Google'd SKU111.CAB and wound up here,
hopefully this'll help.

SYMPTOMS

Every time you launch a
Microsoft Office application (Word, Excel, Front Page, etc), the
Windows installer is launched and attempts to do…something.
After several seconds, the installer fails with an error message
indicating that it can't find a file called sku111.cab.  Even when
you insert a “Windows Office XP Professional with FrontPage 2002″ CD-ROM in
the computer, it fails the same way.  You're unable to locate the
file on the hard drive of the computer or on the CD-ROM you've got.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This
occurred for us when we added a new user to the computer.  We
tried changing the user to a Computer Administrator, and the only
change was that the installer offered a more detailed error
message.  Otherwise, the failure was the same.

SOLUTION

You've
got the wrong install CD.  In this case, it turned out that we had
installed Microsoft Office from a set of discs where FrontPage was on a
separate disc (rather than a single disk with Office and FrontPage on
one disc).  Once we located the Office Pro CD-ROM and inserted it,
the installer was satisfied.  Apparently, this happens the first
time a new user runs an Office app on a computer with Office already
installed.  It's a byproduct of Office setting up registry
settings and initializing the new user.

Hopefully, this was helpful to you.  If so, leave a comment below.

Thanks very much for the excellent advice. At first I did not know how to gt into safe mode but now realize it's the s in excel/s. Voila I've got all Microsoft Office programs back again. I still do not know how I lost them in the first place unless it happened in an upgrade. Frank. Leamington ON

I have had a similar problem. This happened when trying to install an upgrade to Outlook 2003. Problem is that when it tried to roll-back, the installation crashed and was left incomplete.
Now I cannot re-install the upgrade due to being blocked by the infamous SKU111.CAB, but also cannot follow the procedures listed due to inability to open Oultook.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

The first time I tried pamdeboy's method with task mgr. looking for my name and I only found the msiexe file with SYSTEM next to it so I ended the process; closed excel in safe mode; opened it up again and got the same install error screen. then I did the task mgr. again and under processes found my name next to the msiexe. file this time. so I ended that process; closed excel in safe mode; opened it up and VOILA!!! EUREKA! IT WORKED FOR WORD AND EXCEL. I haven't tried for the other applications yet but I am imagining it must have done the trick for all. I didn't have the original CD as this was reconfigured from a work computer I was given when I left he company so this is a relief to fix this doggone thing. Thanks again!

Been bugging me for years on a special function notebook that just worked in spite of the dumb message.

Problem only surfaced when I tried to run System utilities like Disk Clean or Defrag.

FINALLY!! I have no idea why the system thought I needed the original disk because I had removed all of the Office software before.

    THANKS!!!!!
