Christopher’s Early Birthday Present
Christopher’s bike had a flat tire…totally worn out from skidding to a stop (standard bicycle stopping procedure for a seven-year-old). So we ran it by the bike shop to get a new tire, and got a real shock: $37 for a new tube and tire. This was particularly distressing, since the bike was too small for him anyway. “So show us new bikes,” we said to the guy at the bike shop. Yikes! They wanted $250 for a new kid-sized bike.
We begged off and ran down the street to Toys-R-Us. And 15 minutes later walked out the door with a brand new bike for which we paid the whopping sum of $55. He’ll wear it out in a couple of years (and/or outgrow this one, too), so I just couldn’t see buying the top-of-the-line Trek for him (again). His birthday is coming up at the end of this month, anyway, so we just made this his early birthday present, and he was ecstatic!
Besides, the grins seem to be just as big on this one…
