  2. Matt says:

That is awesome! A friend just sent me this article because I was about to take the car to the shop tomorrow for that same problem! It worked like a charm! THANK YOU!!! You probably saved me a ton of dough!!

  3. Jennifer says:

I really hate the thought of having to periodically beat my brand new car. *sigh* Do they not have a fix for it at the shop that is covered under warranty?

  4. Todd says:

I can’t believe this actually worked! I have been suffering the intermittent window syndrome with my ’04 Cooper S on and off for years, with the latest jam going on for a month! Saw your post and had to try it that minute! Just a single blow got it working again! THANK YOU!

  5. frank says:

worked like a charm thanx for posting this on the web now my wife will think i realy fixed it ill tell her it was alot of work lol

  6. Towelies says:

OMG Thanks an ocean for sharing this! 😀 It worked for me but only when the door is closed.

  7. Seth says:

5 second fix, worked great! THANKS SO MUCH for posting this! I did it with the door open. I don’t think I would describe this just an “intermittent” problem. I’m pretty sure it occurs when you don’t let the window close completely and stop on it’s own before releasing the button. As you probably know, the windows automatically move down slightly when you open the door and back up when you close it, to allow it to pass under the rubber weather stripping. I beleive it gets jammed sometimes when it is stopped just short of completely closed (or something like that.) That’s just my guess… Anyway, Thanks again!

  8. Dean says:

I will say no more! it worked ! make sure the door is closed!!!!! and use your palm !!!! MANY THANKS……….

  9. Sue says:

Fantastic works like a charm. I had also decided to just live with it.

  10. Smiley says:

Thanks for sharing!! It worked!! Awesome!! My door lock is also not working, maybe I should try hitting other parts of car to get it working. lol

  11. RM says:

Incredible! My son’s 2003 mini windows had stop working for sometime, since he’s in college can’t afford to take it in for service. Was home this weekend so I thought to google it to see if anything would pop up. Found your link, promptly went out to his car, followed the directions and got both working in less time it took to write this. Thanks fo rhte tip!

  12. Alex says:

Amazing, started to strip it all down and then thought, let’s google this and low and behold fixed it in two minutes. Slight difference though, I took a screwdriver and pushed the door latch shut so the locking mechanism was closed and I was able to work with the door open, I could get a better swing with my thump, and I got an assistant to work the switch whilst I did it. But great tip. You will be rewarded in heaven. don’t forget to unlatch the door by pulling the internal release before attempting to close the door..

  13. HG says:

It worked for me, too! I tried a few whacks every few days, to no avail. Today I sat in the driver seat, and with a barefoot, struck my heel about midway and a bit aft between the 2 speakers and IT WORKED! My husband and I laughed A LOT. Cheers

  14. Brian says:

I can’t believe it worked. I was like sure this can’t true I never get out this cheap. I had both windows stop working the same day. I checked the fuse for both windows. I could hear the regulator switch on when I hit the button. Was preparing to spend big bucks to get it fixed. Found this posting and it worked!!! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!!!!! I hope something good happens to you for helping ppl out.

  15. Bart says:

Awesome, had trouble for the last six months and now it works like a charm. Thanks@

  16. WOW, I have a 2004 Mini Cooper with this same issue, and this worked. I also wanted to note, this also fixes the window not sealing… where when you close the door, the window goes down and up to seal under the roof. Not sure if I make sense.. but it works. Thank you

  17. Van says:

Thanks for the tip it worked like a champ .

  18. Yolanda Chetty says:

Thank you so much for this amazing solution. My window also stopped working and I just spent a fortune on replacing the thermostat I thought I would just live with it. I was bored so I googled to see what the problem was and I came across your answer. Wow, this is so amazing ans costs nothing. Thank you so much and God bless you for your kindness. Thank u so so much.

  19. DR says:

ThanX – works like a charm.

  20. Scott says:

YES! I have a 2004 Mini Cooper S and have had intermittent problems with the driver’s side window getting stuck all the way up since the car was new. While the car was still under warranty the dealership replaced the motor, but that didn’t really fix the problem. I saw your post and was extremely skeptical. Three pops with the side of my fist later and I was about to call BS. Then on the fourth hit it started working again! Unbelievable.

  21. Teresa says:

I have a 2006 Mini Cooper S that I am having window and sunroof issues… Several times I have gone out to the car only to find that both windows are down about 5 inches and my sunroof is up. Is anyone else having this same problem or do you know what could be wrong?? Thank you!!

  22. Scott says:

Teresa, I think this is some sort of built in feature. I can’t remember exactly what triggers it but if you press the lock button too many times on your key then both windows will lower a few inches and the sunroof also slides open a bit. I guess this was meant for people that wan to air out the car on a hot day but still have some security. I thought there was something wrong too but it looks like it’s by design. Hope that helps.

  23. Scott says:

I tested out the partial window open. It’s triggered by unlocking using the unlock button on the key then pressing down and holding the unlock button for three seconds. You can then lock the car and the sunroof and windows will keep the slightly open position. If you don’t want to do the partial window open then be careful not to press the unlock button too long.

  24. Steve says:

Awesome… quick bang and window works after 6 months… thanks a million

  25. Mike says:

I also made an appointment to have the driver’s side window repaired because it stopped working a few days ago. After reading your post, I tried exactly what you said and IT WORKED! THANK YOU!!!!

  26. Chris says:

I had an appointment scheduled w/ the dealer for this week and just for kicks looked up this issue. I tried this trick (door closed and used the non thumb side of my fist to give it a good whack) and it worked on both non-functioning windows on my 2003 Mini. You’re lifesaver!
It seems that with so many people having this problem that Mini should do a recall or at least offer free service to correctly fix the issue.

  27. PennyLaine says:

I was just getting po’ed about my driver side window takin’ a vaca also. Tried this simple little method and….yippi!! It works awesome!! Thank you thank you thank you!!

  28. alan says:

thanks…worked great and just in time for summer!

  29. Lina says:

Currently banging as hard as I can on my door in between the handle and large speakers…not working for me like it is for others! I can hear gravel when I hold the switch up but the window is still stuck. Please help with any advice! Thanks!

  30. Nick says:

Already bought the motor and regulator. Was trying to find a way to lower the window so i could replace. Stumbled upon this post, and now I don’t need the new motor and regulator anymore.

  31. Erik says:

THIS ACTUAL WORKS we thought it wouldn’t work then we tried it a second time and it was fixed.

  32. Mike says:

    Thank you so much!!!

  33. Devin says:

HAHA! This worked! Was just Googling on how to take apart my door to try to diagnose the problem and stumbled upon this post. Took 2 thumps with the non thumb side of my fist and the window works like new.

  34. Mandy says:

I’m sat in my car gob smacked!!!!! Just rang a garage to fix my window £160 for new motor, I obviously said no thank you
Came across this post and started hitting hard with a hammer 🙂 and presto it worked I’m amazed not worked for 5 months
Thank you so much for this post, I’m off out in my car now with a working window

  35. Mike says:

Brilliant! Worked first time. I’d been swearing at my car for weeks and dreading have to take the door apart. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  36. John says:

Fantastic! Spent a fair bit of cash getting this issue fixed a few years ago, and when it happened again, was resigned to doing the same. Was googling for parts to do the job when I came across this tip. Nothing ventured, nothing gained – couple of hard knocks with my hand and Open Sesame!

    Thanks – great tip!

  37. Suzy Lewellen says:

    THANK YOU!! It worked!!

  38. David says:

    It worked!

  39. Gary says:

I thought the motor or the actuator was shot. Tried your secret work perfect saving money and time.

  40. Veronica says:

My window is stuck completely down. I’ve tried and tried hitting the car and it’s not working. Does this only work if the window is stuck in the cracked position?

    • Eric Longman says:

Whenever I had this problem, it was when the window was up, not down. Hard to say whether this is specific to the “mostly-up” position. Sorry it’s not working for you, though. I feel your frustration, and am quite certain that you have been beating your car with a suitable level of aggression. 😉

  41. John Miller says:

I did just like you said and I am happy my passenger.Side window works again thanks.

  42. rick says:

Worked just like magic. Hope this solution works again if needed. Thanks

  43. Brian says:

It worked, own a 2003 with 134k, thanks

  44. Americo says:

Hey thanks for the tip it works great i have a 2003 cooper

  45. Helen of Joy says:

Mini service quoted me approx $500 to replace motor…. so with skepticism I tried whacking the door a few times. No immediate success, however, the following morning I tried again and bingo! – down went the window. I think the trick is in where you whack it. Half way down, between the small upper speaker and the larger one at the bottom seems to be the sweet spot. Thanks for a very happy, low-tech solution!!!

  46. Maraty702 says:

Just tried the “WACK THE MOLE” trick and to my surprise on the 4th thump IT WORKED, TOO! I am surprised and now have saved $$$$! Thanks to all that gave me the oomph to try it! Just wonder how long it will stay “fixed”?

  47. GreeneGiant says:

WOW..my daughter came in and told me that her windows in her 2003 Mini only worked from time to time. I jumped online and came upon this string of posts…..thank goodness I did because the thump method worked perfectly. Both windows now operate as they should. Thanks very much for the tip!

  48. CheekyOne says:

Add me to the list of believers! Today i pulled up to my mailbox to retrieve the mail….and the window on my 2002 MINI wouldnt roll down. 🙁 I got online (mostly to get a heads up on how big my repair bill was gonna be) and found this page. I decided I had nothing to lose…. so i went out to the garage, followed the directions and….BINGO! I now have a functioning door! Thanks so much!!! Made my day! :).

  49. wizardsmurf says:

Thank you so much bought a mini cooper 52 plate yesterday was fine till today when window stoped working my husband was well angry told him about your little trick so went out and done it he couldnt belive it worked thank you x

  50. ZinaD says:

Okay this is so insane. My mini’s driver side window was just not working. I had my dad take a look and we were both frustrated. My dad looked online and came across this trick and didn’t tell me till after the fact. We’re both in shock. Thank you for sharing.

  51. Sherrie says:

My Windows Quit working @ A drive in @ my bank. I thought it was a fuse, then I thought it was because I washed it , maybe the windows froze. Checked fuses they are all right took a blow dryer to the doors. I’m out of options so I will try your simple wish me luck. Thanks

  52. Sherrie says:

    hope this works

  55. CC says:

it worked like a charm! Thanks!

  56. Mike says:

This worked for me twice so far. I imagine that one day I’ll need to replace the motor, since I have 95k miles on the car, but this trick does work.

  57. Garrett says:

No way. I didn’t believe it would work. I got in my car, did what you said and it worked. Thanks!

  58. Amaan says:

Its works! Thanks for posting this fix!!

  59. Karla says:

Already replace regulator – that didn’t fix problem. Tech says it is the motor. Well, you can bet I am going to try this befor I sink more $$ into it. Will let you know!

  60. victoria says:

I tried this and it didn’t work for me, I have a 53 mini cooper chilli pack done 75,000 miles. Any other ideas on how to fix it??

  61. Eric Longman says:

    Hi Victoria,

Sorry it didn’t work. 🙁 From what I’ve heard, if this doesn’t fix it, then you probably need a new motor for the window. I’ve been surprised, though, how often this solves the problem for people.

I don’t have my MINI any longer, but I sure loved that car.

  62. victoria says:

    Hi Eric,

I know I was surprised too as I have read over 30 comments on various websites saying this worked for them, I must just be an unlucky one! I will take it to a garage I think, its baking hot here and the air conditioning rinses my petrol. cant win!!

Thanks for the advise though, I will try the bashing trick a few more times and if it still fails I’ll just suck it up and pay the bill. I love my mini too but I think i’ll sell it and get one after 2006. They seem to have a lot less wrong with them than my 53 plate.

  63. Pete says:

You must be an unlucky one because I came across this in a google search because this was happening with my ’04 and this trick fixed it. However, I will say that I had to do it twice because I didn’t hit it hard enough the first time.

  64. Alan Read says:

Brilliant…Just tried it on my daughters 52 plate MCS with sticking drivers side window, cleared the fault!

  65. Alex says:

My Passenger side window has been stuck for over a year and then my drivers side went down today…Googled it….found you…It worked like a charm on both…I’d buy you a beer if I could. Thanks Man!

  71. Christine says:

Worked for me. My husband has just attempted to get someone to manually move the window up and I asked did he research how to get it up and he said no. I told him to I will check. Called him and told him to pull over and told him what to do and BANG it worked like a charm. THANK YOU THANK YOU THAnk YOU!!!!

  72. Zweli says:

My driver’s window been stuck for more than 3 months tried everywhere with no luck, just Google it now tried your trick works like a charm, thanks so so much

  73. Jones says:

LOL… Thanks a thousand!!!! It worked. Very old school method. Go figure..

  74. Dierdre Stoneking says:

OMG!!!!!!!!! You just saved me $400.00+. I’ve been having the same intermittent problems with my driver side window on my 2004 mini. I’m getting ready to list it and was resigning myself to having it fixed. Thank you so much for the great tip. You gotta love the Internet!!!!!

  75. Daniel says:

So apparently what happens is the pillarless doors require the window to go up and down slightly when opening and closing the door as long as the window is in the fully up position when you open and/or close it.. This repetitive motion causes a flat spot in the armature of the motor that drives the window up and down, which in turn is what’s causing the jam. Hitting it generally knocks the jam loose but it is a sign the motor is going bad. But what an awesome fix. I’ve been doing it to mine ever since it started acting up!

  76. Patrick says:

Well, just tried this on my 02 Mini and like magic, it works. Sure beats spending $300+ to replace the motor! Thanks so much!

  77. David says:

Had my 2003 in the shop to fix this. They called and were wanting approval to break the regulator in order to get the window down to fix the window motor. It was going to cost me over $600 when it was done. I told them to try to hit the door to get the window to come down. I would have paid to have the window motor replaced but didn’t want them to break another part just to end up charging me to fix an additional problem they were going to create . They told me no. So I told the shop to stop everything. I drove over, picked up my car, took the panel off, banged on the side, and now I have a working window. Of course I lost over $200 for them to open the door panel and do nothing. Thanks for your post.

  78. Terry says:

Just tried it – worked for me 🙂

  79. Susana says:

It worked! Passenger window 2003 S. Thank you so much! I feel like I hit the jackpot. You saved me from an expensive trip to the dealership.

  80. JIm Conneally (MINI JIM) says:

2002 Mini S Less than 50K. Great tip. Had to kick it with my left foot (door open) after 3 left handed attempts. Too funny.

  81. Gifford says:

Thanks for the tip! I was climbing over the passenger seat in my R50 because I couldn’t shut the door with the window stuck in the closed position. This worked great!

  82. Texas mini says:

Thank you!!! My 04′ mini did this a couple of days ago and I’ve been stuck having to open door at bank and other places. Tried this option exactly as you described and instantly worked. I couldn’t stop laughing at how simple and easy this was. Thanks from a South Texas mini

  83. Cheryle says:

hey thanks so much. Worked like a charm on my 2011 Mini Cooper!

  84. nana says:

Omg it worked like magic on my 2002 MCS (Sheldon Cooper). thanks so much for sharing.

  85. Naomi says:

My 51 plate passenger window has just decided to stop working so I used your trick and it worked, thanks for sharing

  86. Lady says:

Wow, my driver side window has been stuck on and off for a year and completely stopped about a month ago. Saw this and tried it this morning and it works, my son and I couldn’t stop laughing. Thank you so much..

  87. Big Dave says:

I’m a mechanic and when I read this fix I thought it was absolute “BS”, however I tried it on my 2003 anyway. It didn’t work with the door closed then I read try it with door open. I tried it with the door open and it worked like a charm. Thanks for the tip, it’s PFM!!!

  88. Nathan says:

    Worked for us!! Legend 😀

  89. Kelsey says:

Worked for me too!!!! 2004 mini S
I’ll try it on other vehicles.

  90. Stacy says:

This worked for my 2003 Mini. Amazing. Thank you so much!

  91. Jayne says:

Fantastic this worked first try for my 04 mini. Thanks for posting

  92. cbob says:

I’m glad you people find these posts so amusing Mini Coopers are junk the problem is not the motor it is the window regulator I guarantee you take it apart and you’re going to see broken plastic pieces that are poorly designed and cant take the stress of the door closing against the seal hitting the door is only a temporary repair the window will stick again.

    • Eric Longman says:

Maybe so. I don’t know what the cause is, but for some reason this bizarre approach works to get it going again.

    • David says:

I agree. Walloping the door does seem to work for a period but what we’re not getting to the bottom of is why it’s happening in the first place?
Mine got stuck down in Winter on a 300 mile drive to Newcastle. I tried to hide in a services so nobody could see me doing a Basil Fawlty on the driver’s door. I felt like thrashing it with a tree branch just to teach it a lesson

  93. David says:

Can I just add, disconnecting and reconnecting the battery also seems to work. My mini was hit by an HGV (on the drivers door ironically) but the impact did t resolve the iffy window. The body shop repaired and resprayed it, didn’t touch the inside of the door and hey presto it’s working perfectly again.

  94. John says:

It worked on the first try. Thank you much for your advice.
